I haven’t got a diagnosis but I’m completely sure that I have ADD. My ex partner was looking online to find an answer for my messiness and disorganisation and he came across ADD, since then I’ve read so much online about it and I identify with it all. I feel like I’ve been really suffering with it for a long as I can remember. Really suffering. I want some help from someone who really understands. I want them to teach me to deal with all, and as a last resort I’m willing to try medication to fix it. When I went to my doctor he completely didn’t care. He said I may have mild ADD and I’m probably just a bit depressed! I don’t trust GPs as it is so I don;t know what to do! I don’t have the money to go private but I really need some help! argh!!!
I think the guidelines say that a GP must look to buy in services to refer to an ADHD specialist if it is needed and they do not have one available therefore your should insist upon this. Ask to be referred to Dr Sanjay Jain – he does private and NHS at the learning assessment centre in Horsham.
At risk of stating the obvious, the NHS is free at the point of use. You start by seeing your GP. See FAQ 1 here. Otherwise have a look at our Specialist list (there’s a link to it from FAQ 2 – see link earlier & scroll down). It would also be worth discussing it on the Forum .
// it takes 5 months ’till an NHS psychiatrist can give you a free ADHD assessment. That’s why I’m looking into paying a private psychiatrist, and I want to pay him less than GBP 500 for it.
// sorry, I’m impulsive. I know it’s a problem, and that’s also why I’m looking into some good treatment such as CBT
I have recently had some sessions of CBT for ADHD at the adult ADHD clinic at the Maudsley Hospital wich was a total disaster and left me more screwed up and damaged than i was when i first went through thier doors, first of all i was given to someone whom was still in training and not fully qualified and had little real time hands on experience, which btw they kept from me and i did`nt find out till sessions were terminated, then it was sorry we don`t have anybody available so your just gonna have to deal with it yourself.
So do yourself a big favour and avoid the NHS like your life depended on it because they have absolutly no cule what they are doing.
If your not satisified speak to Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) they deal with complaints and will advise you on the best way forward and can even call your GP and tell them to referr to. You can also be referred to the ADHD team in some boroughs through the community mental health team that might be a good way as they have more time to listen to your concerns.
Ask your GP to refer you to South London and Maudsley hospital who specialise in ADHD. Prob take 12 months to get to see someone, but at least you will see someone who specialises in this problem. My adult son diagnosed 2 years ago and we are still trying to get some sort of help or support from somewhere. GP useless. All NHS mental subsidies blank end. No one wants to know. So difficult.
Hi, I ask my gp to help me, and I’m again in anti depressive medicine, but this never solve my problems. I read about the symptoms of ADHD and I tick almost everything and in my childhood too.
I ask my gp doctor to speak with a psychiatry but nothing happened, I feel so lost and the depression did not change.
I don’t have money to pay private doctor, so I depend of gp. I feel so bad. I need to find out why I feel so despair, sad, lost, outcast.
I have so much copping methods to do the things but after moving country, married, and the idea of a complete family (kids) and the need to have a proper professional life… these methods are failing and I’m in complete despair. So how you guys had the help? how to make the gp doctor believe in you? believe in adult adhd?
A GP is not qualified to decide if you have ADHD or not so they are supposed to pass you on to someone who is qualified. What did your GP say to you? If it was something not very specific ask again (persistently but politely) until they either refer you on or say ‘No’, and if they say no get a reason and write it down. It is worth bringing a list of ADHD symptoms (available else where on this site) in with you and also a list of which ones you have (not everybody necessarily has all of them) and, importantly how they affect your life – give specific instances of ADHD related disasters if you can. One the whole even GP that are not ADHD friendly will eventually refer you to get you out of their hair! Let us know how you get on. In the mean time you may like to chat on the Forum or come to a group, if you live near enough.
Hi, I have recently been considering that I maybe have ADHD or at least be on some form of scale, I don’t really just want to go to my GP, as, for starters I’ve never really been a regular at any GP, so, I feel I’ll most likely get shunned and dismissed as over reacting or joining in with a “trend” but also, I have recently moved to Twickenham area, so would be joining a new GP and then just slamming that on the table!
I wondered, if anyone had any suggestions as to where I could go to seek advice and help, or to get checked out, by someone who’s going to take a mature and un-prejudice assessment of me and just give me an honest answer, yes or no?
I was considering coming to a support group but, was unsure if, as I don’t have an official diagnosis, I would be allowed?
I’m looking for a starting point really, any help will be much appreciated,
Cheers.
If you are looking for treatment from a doctor unfortunately your GP is the only place you can start, even if you see a specialist privately. ADHD does bring with it procrastination so your feelings are not unusual. Register with one and see what happens. See if you can get to see a GP that is more up with new things and more ‘go ahead’.
You’ll be welcome at support groups whether you are formally diagnosed or no. The next one in the London area (at time of writing is Harrow The next central London one is as above. There is also one in Hammersmith (although there is a charge of £10 to go).
There’s also the forum on this site where you can chat in between meetings.

Posted by test | October 21, 2011, 11:13 pmHi,
is there any place in London with a cheaper adult ADHD assessment than GBP 250 per hour? It takes 2 hours and GBP 500 is too much.
