  2. hello people im sorry to hear about all the troubles your having,im pretty much in the same position i seem to go from blaming myself for the way i am to then remembering i have adhd lol. now ive been on drugs since i was 17 ,mainly cannabis but i have been a heavy smoker . now we all know and are taught that drugs can be very damaging to a persons life and future, so i always felt that was my main burden and responsible for holding me back and causing my ever ongoing ups and downs. i currently get no help at all and seem too always try and deal with it myself ,thinking i must try harder. i did once or actually twice visit the maudsley but if i remember rightly the outcome was not what i had hoped for because at the time i was still smoking very heavily and on antidepressants so i was told they felt they couldnt really help me due to what i was on as it would only confuse the issue, my adhd needed to be assesed on its own unhindered by anything else. i feel so lost and just wanna feel better about myself. i have managed on my own to cut my weed right back but i am still very reliant upon it but i think i now see the adhd more clearer and dont just blame the drug or myself for just being mad lol. im currently trying to seek help for my adhd but not getting very far as my pyschiatrist team locally told my doctor i dint always keep to appointments and they feel i dont warrant pyschiatric help even though i am diagnosed and saw a child pyschologist when i was younger had tics and ended up going to a private boarding school for smaller classrooms with less pupils so i would get more one on one attention .now i dont come from a wealthy background so the education system funded my schooling for nearly 5 years!!! somebody please help meeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!! many thinks for reading and please give feed back

    • Hey,

I’ve just recently been diagnosed as ADHD. I must say that getting my diagnosis was helped by the fact I quit smoking weed and have cut back on my drinking a little. I’m on medication now and the benefits are a little hard to judge just yet. I would suggest you do your best to kick the cannabis totally, making small reductions can help, I personally go cold turkey but the downside is that drink quickly takes the place of the weed. I find that a weekend trip to somewhere totally different helps when kicking the smoking habit as that sudden change can mask the absence of cannabis. The excitement of being somewhere different also takes your mind off things and gives your brain a little break from your daily woes.

Also if you smoke a joint mixed with tobacco then the first thing you need to do cut out the tobacco as that is probably the biggest thing stopping you from kicking the habit. I’ve heard junkies say that kicking tobacco is harder than heroin!!

Showing the doctors and whoever that you are taking positive steps to sort things out will encourage them to help you. I have been on a health kick for a while now and that really helped my doctor to take my problems seriously.

Making progress is often based on a positive feed back loop like this – (1) POTENTIAL – You have potential to get better. (2) BELIEVE – You believe you can get better. (3) ACTION – Take some small positive steps (action) to get better. (4) RESULTS – Positive action gives you positive results (remember there is no failure just feedback) —– Positive RESULTS reinforce your potential, your BELIEF in your potential gets stronger so you are encouraged to take more positive ACTION which then gives you more positive RESULTS and around you go again but in a positive way and you get better and happier each time.

Its all about the first small positive step followed by the next small positive step. My late Mum used to say ‘Everyday and in every way I am getting better and better’. Say that every morning and evening it helps !

Well I hope this helps you in some way

      Cheers

      JC

  3. Hi there

Is there an Adult ADD or ADHD support group meeting coming up in London any time soon? I have checked in the ‘calender of events’, but there is nothing in there.. I know that ADD sufferers are not good at organising, but come on….
I would be keen found one if there is not one presently,

    Thanks

  4. I haven’t got a diagnosis but I’m completely sure that I have ADD. My ex partner was looking online to find an answer for my messiness and disorganisation and he came across ADD, since then I’ve read so much online about it and I identify with it all. I feel like I’ve been really suffering with it for a long as I can remember. Really suffering. I want some help from someone who really understands. I want them to teach me to deal with all, and as a last resort I’m willing to try medication to fix it. When I went to my doctor he completely didn’t care. He said I may have mild ADD and I’m probably just a bit depressed! I don’t trust GPs as it is so I don;t know what to do! I don’t have the money to go private but I really need some help! argh!!!

    • I think the guidelines say that a GP must look to buy in services to refer to an ADHD specialist if it is needed and they do not have one available therefore your should insist upon this. Ask to be referred to Dr Sanjay Jain – he does private and NHS at the learning assessment centre in Horsham.

  5. Hi,
is there any place in London with a cheaper adult ADHD assessment than GBP 250 per hour? It takes 2 hours and GBP 500 is too much.

    • At risk of stating the obvious, the NHS is free at the point of use. You start by seeing your GP. See FAQ 1 here. Otherwise have a look at our Specialist list (there’s a link to it from FAQ 2 – see link earlier & scroll down). It would also be worth discussing it on the Forum .

      • that’s not what I asked. Can you read?

// it takes 5 months ’till an NHS psychiatrist can give you a free ADHD assessment. That’s why I’m looking into paying a private psychiatrist, and I want to pay him less than GBP 500 for it.

// sorry, I’m impulsive. I know it’s a problem, and that’s also why I’m looking into some good treatment such as CBT

        Posted by Someone | August 13, 2011, 4:54 pm
      • I have recently had some sessions of CBT for ADHD at the adult ADHD clinic at the Maudsley Hospital wich was a total disaster and left me more screwed up and damaged than i was when i first went through thier doors, first of all i was given to someone whom was still in training and not fully qualified and had little real time hands on experience, which btw they kept from me and i did`nt find out till sessions were terminated, then it was sorry we don`t have anybody available so your just gonna have to deal with it yourself.
So do yourself a big favour and avoid the NHS like your life depended on it because they have absolutly no cule what they are doing.

  6. If your not satisified speak to Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) they deal with complaints and will advise you on the best way forward and can even call your GP and tell them to referr to. You can also be referred to the ADHD team in some boroughs through the community mental health team that might be a good way as they have more time to listen to your concerns.

  7. Ask your GP to refer you to South London and Maudsley hospital who specialise in ADHD. Prob take 12 months to get to see someone, but at least you will see someone who specialises in this problem. My adult son diagnosed 2 years ago and we are still trying to get some sort of help or support from somewhere. GP useless. All NHS mental subsidies blank end. No one wants to know. So difficult.

  8. Hi, I ask my gp to help me, and I’m again in anti depressive medicine, but this never solve my problems. I read about the symptoms of ADHD and I tick almost everything and in my childhood too.
I ask my gp doctor to speak with a psychiatry but nothing happened, I feel so lost and the depression did not change.
I don’t have money to pay private doctor, so I depend of gp. I feel so bad. I need to find out why I feel so despair, sad, lost, outcast.
I have so much copping methods to do the things but after moving country, married, and the idea of a complete family (kids) and the need to have a proper professional life… these methods are failing and I’m in complete despair. So how you guys had the help? how to make the gp doctor believe in you? believe in adult adhd?

    Posted by Iris | July 9, 2011, 3:09 pm
    • A GP is not qualified to decide if you have ADHD or not so they are supposed to pass you on to someone who is qualified. What did your GP say to you? If it was something not very specific ask again (persistently but politely) until they either refer you on or say ‘No’, and if they say no get a reason and write it down. It is worth bringing a list of ADHD symptoms (available else where on this site) in with you and also a list of which ones you have (not everybody necessarily has all of them) and, importantly how they affect your life – give specific instances of ADHD related disasters if you can. One the whole even GP that are not ADHD friendly will eventually refer you to get you out of their hair! Let us know how you get on. In the mean time you may like to chat on the Forum or come to a group, if you live near enough.

  9. Hi, I have recently been considering that I maybe have ADHD or at least be on some form of scale, I don’t really just want to go to my GP, as, for starters I’ve never really been a regular at any GP, so, I feel I’ll most likely get shunned and dismissed as over reacting or joining in with a “trend” but also, I have recently moved to Twickenham area, so would be joining a new GP and then just slamming that on the table!
I wondered, if anyone had any suggestions as to where I could go to seek advice and help, or to get checked out, by someone who’s going to take a mature and un-prejudice assessment of me and just give me an honest answer, yes or no?
I was considering coming to a support group but, was unsure if, as I don’t have an official diagnosis, I would be allowed?
I’m looking for a starting point really, any help will be much appreciated,
    Cheers.

  10. or…sometimes i dont love it

    • If you are looking for treatment from a doctor unfortunately your GP is the only place you can start, even if you see a specialist privately. ADHD does bring with it procrastination so your feelings are not unusual. Register with one and see what happens. See if you can get to see a GP that is more up with new things and more ‘go ahead’.

You’ll be welcome at support groups whether you are formally diagnosed or no. The next one in the London area (at time of writing is Harrow The next central London one is as above. There is also one in Hammersmith (although there is a charge of £10 to go).

There’s also the forum on this site where you can chat in between meetings.
