Finding a Coach

Here are a few tips and questions that may be helpful:

  • Interview 2 or 3 coaches before you decide (or as many as needed).
  • Look for a coach with an accurate breadth and depth of knowledge about Adult ADHD.
  • Ask the coach if they have received specific ADHD training.
  • Ask the coach about their level of experience (how many delivered hours of coaching, how many coaching clients).
  • Ask questions about their coaching techniques and tools (look for a coach with a flexible approach rather than a ‘one-size fits all’).
  • Ask the coach for details about their formal training, accreditation, and continuing professional development (what did their training cover, the length of the training programme, are they keeping their skills up to date, are they being supervised, are they a member of a coaching body such as the International Coach Federation, the Association for Coaching, the Special Group in Coaching Psychology, and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council).
  • Ask the coach about any other training or work/life experiences they may have incorporated into their coaching style (eg psychology, creative arts, law, counselling etc).
  • Look for someone who is a good listener and is also asking you the right questions (questions that will help you see the direction in which you wish to move).
  • Ask if they subscribe to a coaching code of ethics, and ask to see the code.
  • Ask the coach for at least 2 references and then contact them. Do not rely upon testimonials.
  • Make sure that their contract for services includes a schedule of coaching sessions, all costs including any extra expenses/fees, payment terms, outcomes and deliverables, a confidentiality clause, and termination of the service.
  • And finally don’t forget that coaching is an important relationship so you should feel that the connection between yourself and a coach is right and appropriate. If in doubt, don’t select!
